Fire FAQs

What is the time commitment?

60 hours/year are required to be a member of the department. Some examples of how to earn hours include:

  • Fire calls
  • Weekly truck checks and/or trainings
  • Monthly meetings
  • Committee meetings and work
  • Department trainings
  • Special events, such as town parades or community events (e.g. Open House) at the station

Experience and knowledge that you gain will be based on the effort that you put in.  The more time that you commit, the more you will learn.

The department does not have structured shifts. When there is a fire call, members respond as able from their home or other local areas. Members are not expected to respond to every call.

What is the process to become a volunteer?

Note: A background check is required as part of the application process.

How do I become a responding member?

To advance your training, New York State offers a variety of courses. Many of these are offered locally at least once per year. You can select the training(s) that best match your schedule.

Note: You must complete an annual physical to qualify as a responding firefighter.

I don’t want to be a responding member, but I would love to join and help the Dryden Fire Department! Are there any opportunities for me?

Yes! There are many responsibilities and positions within the department that ensure our operations run smoothly and successfully.

Our administrative support includes, but is not limited to, the Board of Directors and Committees. Some of the Committees include marketing, social, IT, new member, and bylaws, but we welcome all skillsets and expertise.

What is the difference between the Fire Rescue and Dryden Ambulance?

Ambulance is a transporting agency, and the rescue is a unit to provide care until the ambulance arrives. The Fire Rescue started serving the community in Summer 2024.
